Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do you accept insurance?
Currently, Dr. Malla does not accept insurance and is considered an "out-of-network" provider, meaning that clients pay Dr. Malla directly. She does, however, provide superbills that you can submit directly to your insurance for reimbursement.
2. What is a superbill?
A superbill is a detailed receipt containing diagnostic codes and session information that you can submit to your insurance provider to request out-of-network reimbursement. Before submitting a superbill, please check your OON benefits, whether you have an HSA (health savings account), and the limits of your deductible before coverage kicks in. As these details can be tricky to navigate and vary widely by insurance carrier, Dr. Malla recommends contacting your insurance directly and referencing https://www.cubetherapybilling.com/superbill-explained-what-it-is-how-it-works-and-why-you-need-one-for-insurance-claims additionally as needed.
3. Can I get reimbursed by my insurance?
While I don't accept insurance directly, many clients successfully receive partial or full reimbursement by submitting the superbills I provide to their insurance company. Please see https://www.cubetherapybilling.com/superbill-explained-what-it-is-how-it-works-and-why-you-need-one-for-insurance-claims for more specific details on what to look for when considering superbills.
4. How long is a typical therapy session?
Standard practice in the field of psychology supports weekly therapy sessions that last about 50 minutes long, however as a neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-informed provider Dr. Malla is flexible for clients with special needs and can accommodate longer or shorter session lengths. Additionally, those seeking relationship counseling often find 90 minutes to be a more ideal standard session length.
5. What if I need more time?
Extended sessions are available and prorated beyond the standard 50-minute timeframe based on flexibility and preference. This is especially helpful on an as-needed basis for more intensive trauma therapy, relationship therapy, or simply because a client prefers it that way.
6. How does pricing work for longer appointments?
Additional time beyond 50 minutes is charged on a prorated basis relative to the agreed-upon session rate.
7. What happens during the first appointment?
Initial sessions typically involve getting to know one another, and common topics include what brought you into therapy, why now, what goals you have for your treatment, and plenty of time for any questions you may have for me or about the therapy process in general. Paperwork is collected virtually and reviewed before the intake appointment. Dr. Malla is happy to work on a client-led, collaborative basis but for nervous clients who are unsure of where to start or for whom the therapy process is novel, she is also great at providing structure and asking guided questions as well.
8. How frequently should I schedule sessions??
This depends on your unique situation, availability for scheduling, and how committed you are to exploring something with depth and consistency versus addressing it in a more progressive, paced way. We'll collaborate to find the right cadence, though weekly meetings are common when starting out. After this, some clients find it more impactful to attend every other week or other intermittent schedules to allow for integration and time to practice the tools or ways of thinking they're learning in therapy.
9. Can you provide letters of support for gender-affirming care?
Yes, I am able to provide assessment and letters of support for hormone therapy, surgical procedures, and other gender-affirming medical interventions per current WPATH standards and would be happy to meet with you and help you along your gender journey. Please feel free to reference the WPATH Standards of Care with your other medical providers via this link: https://wpath.org/publications/soc8/
10. Is what I share kept private?
YES! Confidentiality is a legal cornerstone of professional therapy, meaning that your visits will be kept private per medical guidelines via HIPAA and that the content of our sessions will be kept completely confidential. Some industry or professional clients have elected to incorporate an NDA or non-disclosure agreement as well, although this is entirely redundant. Dr. Malla is a professional secret-keeper, and understands concerns around keeping one's innermost thoughts and personal experiences private.
